Ashkenazi, Bezalel
(c.1520-91)
   Palestinian talmudist. Born in Israel, he settled in Egypt, where he became chief of the Egyptian rabbis. After he excommu-nicated the nagid of Egyptian Jewry, this office was abolished. He later lived in Jerusalem, where again he was chief rabbi. He travelled extensively to collect money for the community and encourage immigration. His Shittah Mekubbetzet is a collection of medieval talmudic commentaries.
